The teacher observation form is a tool used by instructional leaders in K-12 schools to assess and evaluate various aspects of a teacher's instructional practices. It is designed to provide an overview of the teacher's performance in areas such as instructional arrangement and staffing, instructional activities and use of academic learning time, evidence of instructional planning, instructional quality, a positive learning environment, and appropriate and effective use of personnel.
In addition to demographic questions, the form includes sections for describing the activities taking place in the classroom. This includes a description of each activity, the number of students involved in each activity, and the type of student grouping being used. The form also includes questions related to the amount of instructional time spent on non-instructional issues, the level of student engagement, the ability of the teacher to redirect off-task behavior, and the efficiency of classroom routines in minimizing lost time.
Furthermore, the form assesses the presence of a lesson plan and its quality. This includes whether a lesson plan is available, if it includes a pre-assessment to guide differentiation, if it incorporates strategies that accelerate learning, if it includes decisions for student groupings based on student preferences and needs, and if it demonstrates flexibility in student grouping.
